About this app

Quartet Lab is a hands-on workshop for writing and arranging for string quartet: draw a melody and get a four-part arrangement back, generate one from scratch, or study real repertoire — all rendered in notation and piano roll, and played back with real string samples. ARRANGE — Draw a Violin I melody on the piano roll and arrange it for string quartet in one tap. Choose close or open voicing, chorale/homorhythm, melody+accompaniment or drone texture, harmonic rhythm and chord vocabulary. GENERATE — Create a complete four-part quartet from scratch in any key, major or minor, with the same voicing and texture controls. SCORE & PIANO ROLL — Read the result as hand-drawn notation (correct clefs, including alto clef for viola) or as a piano roll — both scroll together with the playhead. ARTICULATION — Set Arco or Pizzicato per voice from the mixer, or paint it note by note directly on the score or piano roll. LIBRARY — Arrange J.S. Bach chorales for quartet, play real public-domain quartets by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Schumann, or arrange public-domain and CC-licensed popular songs. THEORY — Lessons on range, voicing, texture, idiomatic technique, parallel motion and harmony — written for string quartet, not generic music theory. EXPORT — Export your arrangement as a Standard MIDI File or as audio (.m4a) straight from the Score screen. AUv3 PLUG-IN — Use Quartet Lab inside GarageBand, AUM and other hosts as a tempo-synced generator that outputs quartet audio and MIDI to record in your own DAW. NO ACCOUNT, NO ADS, NO TRACKING — Everything runs on your device.
