About this app

INES Maps lists nuclear and radiological accidents and incidents from around the world by their rating on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), and shows where each one happened on a map. From Level 7 major accidents such as Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi down to Level 1 anomalies, the app covers 134 events from 1945 to the present. Each entry is compiled from public sources and includes the facility's location, date, country, a summary and a detailed account. KEY FEATURES • Browse by INES level Events are grouped from Level 7 down to Level 1, most severe first and newest first within each level. • Search and filter Search by facility or country, and choose the minimum level to show. • See the location on a map Each facility is shown on a satellite map, so you can see the site and its surroundings. • Detailed accounts Read what happened, why, and what the consequences were, with the date and coordinates. • Wikipedia, right in the app Open the related Wikipedia article without leaving the app. If an article isn't available in your language, translate it with a single tap. • Share Share an event's summary via Messages, email or social media. • Made for larger screens On iPad and an unfolded iPhone Duo, the list and the map appear side by side. On a folded iPhone Duo or any other iPhone, you move between them one screen at a time. • Four languages Available in English, Japanese, German and Italian. GREAT FOR • Anyone interested in nuclear safety or the history of energy • Checking the location and background of an accident in the news • Students, teachers and researchers looking for reference material PLEASE NOTE This app summarizes major events based on publicly available information. Events that predate INES have no official rating; for those, the app shows retrospective assessments by researchers or reference classifications. For official information, refer to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and national regulators. This app displays ads. You can review your ad and tracking choices in Settings (available in some regions).
